Dungeness Spring Fling – Special Events 2011

Won’t you join us for a Spring Fling hike, walk, or bird walk? Bring lunch/snacks, water, layers of clothes, comfortable shoes/hiking boots, visor/cap, sunscreen, camera, binoculars and a smile. Although the walks and hikes are free for Spring Fling participants, the River Center gratefully accepts donations. Funds raised from Spring Fling help support educational programs of the Dungeness River Audubon Center and maintenance of Railroad Bridge Park.

Sunday, May 1: It’s all about Spring Fling! Kick-off takes place in Railroad Bridge Park with activities GALORE – birding, biking, and more....Watch for details.

Monday, May 2: Robin Hill Farm Park Hike (3+ miles round trip- some up & down) with Doug and Gretha Davis. 9 a.m. Meet at Sequim's Public Parking east side of Sequim Ave. next to the Buzz to carpool. A lovely hike on the foot & equestrian paths through forests & field with the birds, flowers & mushrooms. Driving time 30 min. and hiking time 2-2.5 hours. Tuesday, May 3: The Dungeness River in the mountains Hike, Camp Handy 6.4 miles round trip - 600' elevation gain with John Bridge. 8:30 a.m. meet at Sequim's Public Parking east side of Sequim Ave. next to the Buzz to carpool. An easy hike along the upper Dungeness through a great stand of large Douglas Firs. Driving time 45 minutes. Hiking time 3.5 hours. Contact: John Bridge, (360) 683-3151, jbridge@olypen.com. Saturday, May7: World Labyrinth Day “Walk as One at 1:00 p.m.” World Labyrinth Day is intended as a day that brings people from all over the planet together in celebration of the labyrinth as a symbol, a tool, a passion or a practice. Sunday, May 8: Railroad Bridge Trestle & Olympic Discovery Trail Walk (3 level paved miles round trip) with Lyn Muench. 2:00 p.m.Meet at Dungeness River Audubon Center in Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Monday May 9: Hike from Salt Creek to Striped Peak, (5 miles round trip about 1,000 ft. of up & down) with Doug & Gretha Davis. 9 a.m. Meet at Sequim's Public Parking Sequim's Public Parking east side of Sequim Ave. next to the Buzz to carpool. A wonderful hike in & out of forests, including some old growth, plus enjoying the tidal waters. Driving time 90 min. and hiking time 3-3.5 hours. Tuesday, May 10: Bird Walk, Dungeness River Dike, (2 miles round trip), Dave and Julie Jackson. 8:30 a.m. Meet at the parking area on Towne Road near the gate to the dike. Tuesday, May 10: Dungeness River in the mountains Hike, Lower Graywolf River; 9.6 miles round trip - 700' elevation gain with John Bridge. 8:30 a.m. Meet at Sequim's Public Parking east side of Sequim Ave. next to the Buzz to carpool. Saturday May 14: River Center Run, (2k run along Irrigation Parade route; starts and ends in J.C. Penney parking lot) Race will start at 9:15 a.m. Registration $10 for individuals and $25 for families. Contact: Kristin LaMoure, Sequim Gym, (360) 477-1877 or sequimgym@yahoo.com. Proceeds of the race will benefit the Dungeness River Audubon Center and Railroad Bridge Park.

Monday, May 16: Hike on the Dungeness Spit to the New Dungeness Light Station, (11 Miles round trip) with Doug & Gretha Davis. 9:00 a.m. Meet at Sequim's Public Parking Sequim's Public Parking on Sequim Ave. next to the Buzz to carpool. Tuesday, May 17: Bird Walk, Dungeness Recreation Area (3 miles round trip) Dave and Julie Jackson. 8:30 a.m. Meet at the first parking lot inside the gate on Voice of America Drive. Tuesday, May 17: The Dungeness River in the mountains Hike, Slab Camp Trail and then downstream on the Graywolf for a mile 7 miles round trip - 1200' elevation gain with John Bridge. 8:30 a.m. Meet at Sequim's Public Parking east side of Sequim Ave. next to the Buzz to carpool. A down to the river and then back up hike. After we get to the river we will hike downstream for a mile on a little used trail to view a spectacular gorge. Driving time 35 minutes. Monday, May 23: Hike the Miller Peninsula, (9 miles round trip -- some up & down) with Doug & Gretha Davis. 9 a.m. Meet at Sequim's Public Parking east side of Sequim Ave. next to the Buzz to carpool. A wonderful hike in & out of forests, with a stop at the water’s edge looking out at Protection Island. Driving time 40 min. and hiking time 4.5 -5.5 hours. Tuesday May 24: Dungeness River in the mountains Hike, Deer Ridge, (6 miles round trip and 1800' elevation gain) with John Bridge. 8:30 a.m. Meet at Sequim's Public Parking east side of Sequim Ave. next to the Buzz to carpool. Monday, May 30: Fort Worden, Port Townsend. 5 miles exploring Fort Worden trails around the bunkers and historical buildings, and great views of Puget Sound. Driving time 50 minutes each way.
